Cubic Zirconia vs. Moissanite vs. Diamond: which to choose and why
Three stones. At first glance, they may appear identical in a photo. In reality, they are completely different in composition, optical properties, durability, and price. This comparison allows you to choose wisely.
Diamond: The Historical Standard
Diamond is pure carbon crystallized under extreme pressure over millions of years. With a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale — the highest possible — it is the hardest natural stone known. Its refractive index is 2.42, which gives it a characteristic white brilliance. The price of a quality diamond starts at several hundred euros per carat and can reach tens of thousands. Much of that price is historical, cultural, and marketing-driven — not just material.
Cubic Zirconia: The Affordable Imitation
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a synthetic zirconium oxide created in a laboratory since the 1970s. With a hardness of 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, it is significantly softer than diamond and moissanite. Its refractive index is 2.15 — lower than diamond — and produces a cooler, less complex sparkle. With daily use, cubic zirconia scratches and loses its brilliance in months. It is the cheapest option, but also the least durable.
Moissanite: The Premium Choice of the 21st Century
Moissanite is synthetic silicon carbide. With a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, it is the second hardest stone available in jewelry. Its refractive index is 2.65 — higher than diamond — which means it produces more fire and flashes of color than any other stone. It is not a diamond imitation: it is a gemstone with superior optical properties and a price 10 to 20 times lower per equivalent carat.
The Direct Comparison
In hardness, the order is: diamond (10) — moissanite (9.25) — cubic zirconia (8.5). In brilliance and optical fire: moissanite — diamond — cubic zirconia. In durability for daily use: diamond and moissanite are practically equivalent; cubic zirconia visibly degrades over time. In price per equivalent carat: diamond (very high) — moissanite (medium) — cubic zirconia (very low).
Which to choose depending on your situation
If you are looking for an everyday piece with maximum brilliance and durability without the diamond price, VVS moissanite is the rational choice. If you are looking for something symbolic with historical value and don't mind the price, then diamond. If you are looking for something very affordable for occasional use and accept that it will degrade over time, then cubic zirconia. At Silver Status, we work exclusively with VVS moissanite — the option that offers the best balance of optical quality, durability, and price.
